to love my own, heres my side on the star PARA m249.
external:
first off, its not plastic! its made out of a highly advance polymer material resistant to all known chemicals! its scientifically proven to withstand stress beyond human imagination! Crap! who am i kidding, yes its almost all plastic. retractable stock is metal though, so as the mock barrel, flash hider, bipod and front sight. you can buy an optional metal gearbox. the finish is a bit plasticky nothing a can of tamiya paint cant remedy.
gripes: wish the thingying handle moves. its not a complete experience without the moving thingying handle... rearsight is inert. pretty much useless even if functional, i just trace where my bbs go, i have 2k+ of bbs to get to the target anyways..
Weight: (after installing a metal gearbox) it is as heavy as my loaded, all metal m4 ris. weight is evenly distributed as the large batt is store inside the boxmag, closer to your center of gravity. the star's lightness and stabilily during handdling actually made me decide to get this instead of the ca para.
Boxmag: this is where Star's innovation comes in. the box mag is mechanically driven by a servo(like any battery operated boxmag). its powered by an independent power source(again, just like any other auto winding boxmag). it winds simultaneously as you press the trigger(thats where Star left the other boxmags in terms of desig!) that means, you concentrate more on firing and worry less about "winding" the boxmag. thats one less button to push.
housed inside the boxmag is a slot for 2 AA sized battery for the feeding mechanism and its main battery. the wires from the the boxmag going to the gun is well concealed by a flexible coil tube. heres another interesting innovation by star, the connection between the gun and the battery.it uses metal contact points inside the m4 mag well(this is also the reason why the Star 249 CANT take an m4 mag). no wires are exposed giving it a cleaner look. another coil tube is for the bbs.
internals:
the Star m249 comes with a pollycarb gearbox. really got me doubting at first, i just cant believe it'd finish a box load of bbs. turned out i was wrong.the spring retension at the back of the gear box is ADJUSTABLE. meaning you have 2 fps options in one spring. say from an m120 your expecting an fps of 380 - 400, with a minor adjustment, you can go down to 340fps. there, 2 fps readings in one spring. i havent seen that in ANY airsoft LMG. i had a chance to put this geabox to the test before getting me a metal gearbox.
the test.
i shove an m130 in the gearbox. didnt change anything but that. not even the gears, bushings and the piston. used the gun for a couple of weekends, averaging 1-2 bags of bbs a game day. it took every pounding i threw at it! it made a mock at me! the darn thing just wont give up! i got me a metal gearbox not because the stock gearbox gave up on me but its actually the otherway around.. hehe... nah, i just want to add more weight to the gun.
the mods.
installed an STU helical, prom titanium piston, m150(i say, what the heck..) and a customized metal airseal nozzle inside the metal gearbox. why metal you asked? with the amount of bbs that'll go thru it, the plastic one might just not stand a chance..
im using a 1900 mah 9.6 v batt. pero i was able to use a lipoly last game. Man!! i need to get me a lipoly! ang ganda ng rate of fire! balik sa stock! i dont know though how long the stock motor would last....
after the mod.
lets just say im now a happier camper. last chrono reading was 548, peak. not bad ey.. hehehe..
ill try to post pictures pagnakahiram ako ng cam. ayoko ng bumili ng digicam eh, ang mahal e! ;D ;D
